Stars Over Bethlehem
The Stars over Bethlehem Collection
For me, few flowers capture the magic and warmth of Christmas quite like the beautiful poinsettia. Its wonderful star-shaped leaves, rich colours and unmistakable festive charm make it such a special flower, and one that has inspired me to create this collection of seasonal embroidery designs.
The poinsettia, or Euphorbia pulcherrima, originates from Mexico, but over the years it has become one of the most beloved plants associated with Christmas. Although we traditionally think of it in its glorious shades of deep red, I find it fascinating that it is now available in so many beautiful colours, including dark pink, salmon, ivory, soft green and even stunning variegated varieties.
Something I particularly love about the poinsettia is that the colourful parts we admire are not actually flowers, but modified leaves called bracts. The tiny clusters of red and yellow at the centre are the true flowers. Nature has a wonderful way of surprising us!
There are also some lovely traditions and stories surrounding this Christmas favourite. The star-shaped arrangement of its leaves is said to represent the Star of Bethlehem, while the traditional red colour has come to symbolise the blood of Christ and the sacrifice of the crucifixion. These meaningful associations make the poinsettia an especially fitting flower for the Christmas season.
When creating this collection, I wanted to capture not only the beauty of the poinsettia but also some of its natural character and charm. I have included designs that allow you to build beautiful three-dimensional flowers, giving your embroidery wonderful texture, depth and a lovely lifelike quality.
I hope you will enjoy stitching these flowers as much as I have enjoyed creating them. Whether you choose the traditional Christmas reds or experiment with some of the softer, more unusual shades, I hope they will bring something truly special to your festive projects.
As always, my aim at Graceful Embroidery is to create designs that are a joy to stitch and a pleasure to treasure.
