Designs in PES format displaying in black only
I while back a customer contacted me to say that she was having issues with many of my designs when she opened them in her Hatch embroidery software. She uses the PES format and likes to look at the designs in Hatch before sending them to her machine. Not all but quite a few where displaying like this, with no sequence of colours.

I was determined to investigate what the problem was but I could find nothing about it anywhere on the internet. Formats have always been difficult to understand and I have already written a blog about them.
Clearing the confusion about machine embroidery formats
As I create my designs in the VP3 format for my machines, I do not have any Brother or BabyLock software. However I do have the Hatch embroidery software and I could see the problem when I opened some of the converted PES designs there. I usually convert my designs from VP3 to all the other formats using BuzzXplore, apart from ART formats for which I have the Bernina software. I looked at alternatives and in my Husqvarna MySewNet software I noticed that it listed six different versions of the PES software, v2, v4, v6, v9, v10 and v11. I contacted Buzz Tools about this issue and was informed that their software converts to the earliest version of PES which the threads and hoop size will allow, so there was no way of knowing which version of the PES format my designs were being converted to when I use BuzzXplore.

So I managed to ran a trial version of the BabyLock Palete software so I could identify which versions my software was converting the PES designs to. For this particular designs you can see my conversion was to PES v6.

So at least I had worked out how to do my conversions to PES v11 in the future, so that customers do not encounter this issue. Yet I was intrigued why the older versions do not display properly in Hatch so I contacted them. I sent them one of my larger designs which was not displaying correctly.

This was their response.

So the conclusion I came to was that my designs need still to be available in the PES format, which I will continue to convert using BuzzXplore, but there will also be a folder of designs in the PES v11 format converted using the Hatch software, in all future zip files. You will also be pleased to know, if you are a PES format user, that all the designs at Graceful Embroidery that do not show their colours in the PES format now have the option of PES v11 in the zip file.
